Step 1: Confirm Your School District (Do This First)
Your rental address determines your school district. Not your neighborhood name. Not your zip code. Two apartments two blocks apart can feed into completely different districts.

How to confirm: Use the district's online boundary lookup tool, or call the enrollment office with your rental address. Do this BEFORE enrollment — transferring a child mid-year because you enrolled in the wrong district is a headache nobody wants.

Step 2: Enroll Your Child
Most Tyler-area districts offer online enrollment that opens in the summer. You'll need:
→ Proof of residency — your signed lease agreement works. A utility bill in your name at the rental address also works.
→ Child's birth certificate (certified copy)
→ Immunization records — must be current per Texas DSHS requirements
→ Previous school records / transcripts (can often be requested electronically by the new school)
→ Parent/guardian photo ID

If you moved mid-summer and missed the primary enrollment window, don't panic. Districts accept late enrollments — you'll just handle it in person at the campus rather than online.
Step 3: Get Free School Supplies
Tyler's community goes hard for back-to-school. Multiple events are happening between late July and August 6:

The School is Cool event on August 6 is the biggest — hosted by the Tyler Area Business Education Council at the Rose Garden Center. Over 4,000 families attended in 2025. Free school supplies, community resources, and vendor booths. Students must be present to receive supplies.
Additional community giveaways include events at North Tenneha Church of Christ (free supplies while they last, plus snow cones and popcorn) and Green Acres Baptist Church en Español (backpacks, free medical checkups, community resources).

Step 4: Set Up Transportation
School bus: Tyler ISD and surrounding districts offer bus service. Contact the transportation department at your child's school to confirm route availability for your address. Routes are typically finalized in early August.
Carpool: If your neighborhood has a community Facebook group or Nextdoor page, this is where carpool arrangements happen. Ask your neighbors — especially if you're new to the area.
Drop-off/pick-up: Expect traffic congestion around schools for the first two weeks. Morning drop-off peaks between 7:15–7:45 AM. Afternoon pickup peaks between 3:00–3:30 PM. Build in extra time the first week.
Step 5: Budget for the School Year
